The potential for self-treatment is always explored first.  Manipulation, massage, and therapeutic exercises may be employed as additional techniques to promote independence in self care.  In our office the treatment of neck and lower back pain in based on the research of McKenzie, which states that the great majority of disabilities of the spine are mechanical in nature, may it be bending, twisting, picking up something, or sleeping wrong.  This means that the spine can be treated in a mechanical manner.  More important than that, once the principles are understood most of the mechanical treatments can be perfomed by the patient.
